FireWire Trade Association: Revised MacBook proves it [we still matter]!

January 27, 2009

Last week’s nVidia 9400M upgrade of the entry-level $999 consumer class portable has been widely praised because it pairs best-of-class integrated graphics performance with the FireWire. Big deal? Well, Apple’s latest unibody MacBooks do not include an IEEE 1394 port, a connection standard that matters greatly to budget-minded independent musicians and filmmakers, a core constituency of this the Cupertino, CA-based company’s best selling computer product line.

Thereupon, the 1394 Trade Association, an industry group that manages and promotes the standard, has added their collective voice to the chorus of praise for the move.

“The inclusion of 1394 in its latest new MacBook is a welcome sign of Apple’s attention to user enthusiasm for FireWire, and should end concerns about the future of FireWire in the PC,” said James Snider, executive director of the 1394 Trade Association. “Apple users clearly see FireWire as an essential component for their work, and are glad it is included in the white MacBook.”

Put your name on the MacBook FireWire petition

Back in November, Blorge brought you news of MacBook users petitioning Apple for FireWire, which reads in part:

…we pledge to purchase a new MacBook or MacBook Air if you, the inventor of FireWire technology, would be so kind to bring back FireWire ports to those products.

Well, in Blorge’s last write up of the issue, we noted that more than 16,000 people had signed the petition. What is the total as of this writing? Exactly 17,816 signatures.

So, if you have not added your John Hancock yet, now would be a good time.

FireWire, we hardly knew ya…

Yes, Apple is the inventor of FireWire and a founding member of the Trade Association.

So, does the nVidia 9400M upgrade of the $999 MacBook prove Apple’s intent to keep FireWire, or is this just a placeholder until the “rest of us” realize how little we need it?
