Top 5 things Apple should include in ‘iPhone 2.1′
With the news that an updated Apple handset could be coming rather sooner than later—the Worldwide Developer Conference perhaps—the mind immediately begins to wander to what might and should be (neither the twain shall might) built into Cupertino’s next generation über phone.
MacRumors has discovered that Apple’s iPhone 2.x Firmware has evidence of the next generation iPhone, which has been designated “iPhone2,1.” This new model number can be found in the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist in an unencrypted copy of the iPhone firmware.
Further, PinchMedia has noticed actual “iPhone2,1″ models have popped up in their ad serving reports.
So, the inevitable march of time (ie Apple is always up to something) and these two recently unearthed tidbits could reasonably lead one to conclude Phil Schiller will be trying his hand at using Steve’s signature “one more thing” line on us at at the Worldwide Developer Conference, one assumes, in June.
Top 5 things to fix in the iPhone
1. AT&T service [is] horrible, (ZDNet)
— Or, get The iPod Touch: everything great about the iPhone, minus AT&T, Blorge
— See also, The future is the iPod Touch, ZDNet2. Make video recording a default feature, Dream Catcher
— It is great that third parties are working on this, but this basic functionality needs to be regularized and made part of the OS3. The same thing that’s missing from every other internet radio and steaming audio app on the iPhone and iPod touch—background processing.
4. Put a real camera (lens) in the iPhone, PCMag
5. Give us real after market options, like a user replaceable battery and a memory card slot.
MacRumors adds that current speculation holds that the next generation iPhone might include support for multi-core CPUs (ARM) and possibly multi-core CPUs (Imagination Technologies).
The constant variable in any iPhone speculation is which if any version of wireless broadband technology (ie WiMax) Apple will build in. Of course, adding wide area network wireless tech to the iPod touch would truly make it the device of the future.
So, what did I miss? Add your spin to this iPhone future wish list…

Will the Steaming Audio need Parental Controls?
I would be reluctant to ask for an SD card (on top of USB, wifi, and bluetooth) because it would increase the size of the phone. Ditto for the removable battery. It would have to have a smaller capacity to accommodate the extra casing, connectors, latches etc. And, remember what happened last time you bought a new battery for a phone – 6 weeks later the screen died and you threw it out anyway.
Remember PloughGuy’s Law: Battery life = Phone life – 6 weeks.
