Perhaps after a year in the market they—Ives, Cook, Forstall, Jobs et all—expected there would be some real competition in the smart phone / ultra-portable computer market segment. Actually, there is a close substitute for the iPhone, but it doesn’t come from RIM, Nokia, Google or even Microsoft. Apple’s closest competitor in this space is Apple and the closest substitute for the iPhone is not a phone at all—it is the iPod touch.

For anyone who still thinks the rest of us are just like everyone else, think differently. Toyota’s rolling out a new car in Europe, Holland to be specific, and they are marketing it online with the aid of a video and laptop screen saver application. Windows people? They are just not in the (marketing demographic) picture.

While the rest of the MacBook line was upgraded over the last couple of months, the base model was left as-is. That has now changed, with enhancements being made, but with the $999 price remaining the same.

If you are an iPod owner, you know that many things can happen to make you need to move your music from one iPod to another. You could get a new model of iPod and no longer have your old computer.
