Mac software: Google Earth 5 beta, iWork ‘08 updates
One of the best (free) things ever to happen on the fairer platform just gained three sweet new features—one of which is sure to be a boon to your underseas prospecting efforts. And, what’s up with Apple’s unnumbered Pages, Keynote and Numbers updates?
Google has released Google Earth 5 beta, which comes to market with a trio of important new features:
• Historical imagery from around the globe
• Ocean floor and surface data from marine experts
• Simplified touring with audio and voice recording
Of course, this is a free update, though the search giant offers Google Earth Pro for $400, which provides access the ultimate research, presentation, and collaboration tool for location-specific information.
iWork ‘09: Unnumbered patches
Strange days on Apple’s Support Downloads page where you will three iWork-flavored updates, which don’t carry numeric designations:
Numbers Update, 26.14MB
— This update addresses compatibility issues with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2008 as well as general compatibility issues.
Pages Update, 27.3MB
— This update addresses general compatibility issues.
Keynote Update, 31.27MB
— This update addresses compatibility issues with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2008 as well as general compatibility issues.
However, examining the files in Software Updates, or mousing over the download links, reveals iWork ‘08 version numbers—Numbers 1.0.3, Keynote 4.0.4 and Pages 3.0.3. Apple, given that these updates are for iWork ‘08, why not just label them accordingly?
