Demand for Mac developers triples

February 4, 2009

Jobs in just about every sector are getting cut. People are getting furloughed and laid off by the thousands. Yet, if you have the right skills, you could find yourself getting hired.

InfoWorld reports that a new employment study by Veritude indicates that only 38 percent of US companies are planning to hire new IT workers this year, significantly off the 52 percent who said they wanted to hire new hands last year at this time.

Further, 38 percent of the companies surveyed also said they are planning to cut jobs, up from just 4 percent in 2008’s tally.

Need skillz? Get some class!

Although it isn’t exactly a Bachelor of Science in Macintosh, News.com reports that the University of Utah, the only Apple Authorized Training Center in that state, is offering Mac OS X Deployment v10.5 and similar classes.

On February 9th to the 11th, we will be offering Mac OS X Deployment v10.5, which covers deploying your Macintosh systems initially, deploying the OS systems for various uses, and providing updates and maintenance for the Macintosh system.

Do you know of other universities, community colleges or technical offering Mac classes or even sheep skins? Let us know in the comments!

And, that employment outlook holds true pretty much everywhere in the US. So, aside from setting up a blog (ugh, there are too many of us already) or charging your relatives for fixing their Macs (instead of working pro bono), what is a reasonably skilled Mac (small “g”) god to do?

Two threads in Veritudes report offer some reason for hope: 1.) most companies are not planning deep cuts, and 2.) workers with C, C++, C# and, wait for it, Mac development skills are in demand. Specifically, 17 percent of companies surveyed, more than triple last year’s 5 percent, said they are looking for people skilled in the dark arts of OS X.

I wonder if my HyperCard skills are demand…
