The Sims 3 comes to the iPhone and Touch

February 5, 2009

Soon, iPhone and iPod Touch owners will be able to join the millions of PC users already spend a lot of time in the world of the Sims. Electronic Arts has announced that the next version of the game will run on the iPhone and Touch.

The bad news is the release of all versions of the new edition of the popular Sims software has been pushed back until June 2. The good news is that the game will come in versions for the two highly portable platforms, the iPhone and iPod Touch. This is the first time that Electronic Arts has publicly specified that the game will be available for these Apple devices.

This is the also first time that the Sims announcement from EA is not connected to long-time Mac development partner Aspyr Media, according to a Macworld article. Electronic Arts has published titles for the Mac itself since 2007, relying on TransGaming’s Cider technology to publish Mac versions of the games for all Intel-based Mac systems. When Spore (the virtual life game from Sims creator Will Wright) was released last year, it marked the first time that EA had released Mac and PC versions of a game on the same day and date, and in the same package.

For those of you unfamiliar with The Sims, it is a tremendously popular life simulation game. It lets the players create a unique virtual simulated person (a Sim) and then make decisions for them as they go through their “life.” The game provides other Sims with whom you may interact, and a wide variety of lifelike activities in which you can participate. The game is intended to be a learning tool, allowing players to experiment with the effects of various life decisions. It has also become popular as a multi-player game.

This will give iPhone and iPod Touch users another popular gaming choice. Now, when you see someone intensely concentrating on their iPhone or Touch on that long train ride home, they may actually be controlling simulated beings in a world that you can’t see rather than finishing up the email for the day or organizing their music library.
