Sync your Safari bookmarks without MobileMe
Apple’s default browser on the Mac offers best-of-class Java performance, great integrated RSS reading functionality, fast HTML rendering and powerful bookmark syncing. However, regarding that last feature, if you don’t have a $99 per year MobileMe account, backing up and syncing your bookmarks across multiple Macs and locations is anything but convenient—until now that is.
That is because the previously Firefox only Foxmarks service is compatible with Safari and Internet Explorer. Now, you can share and/or back up your bookmarks from your work PC, laptop and Mac at home using this free and easy to use service.

“Foxmarks is a clever, well-done product that can help users of multiple computers and multiple browsers to keep their Web lives in order”—Walt Mossberg, All Things Digital

How does it work? Well, backing up my bookmarks for the first time, including the time required to download the software and set up an account, took a grand total of about 10 minutes. I installed Foxmark for Firefox (an add-on) and Safari, a System Preferences Panel, and a quick check of my password protected, Web-based account revealed not just those bookmarks, but also my StumbleUpon bookmarks, too. Also, I noticed there is the option to import Delicious bookmarks and you can export bookmarks as an HTML file for on-the-go convenience.
There are caveats, however. Yes, Foxmark is Safari compatible, but only with the Mac version and users must be running Leopard and version 3.x of Safari. Further, Walt adds that Internet Explorer reliability is—surprise—somewhat sketchy.
So, Foxmark perhaps isn’t quite ready to save the world. Still, if you are running multiple browsers on multiple computers at multiple locations, this is the best available tool for keeping order among your bookmarks. And, honestly, Foxmark is pretty good…
What’s your take?

I discovered Foxmarks about two months ago, and haven’t looked back. I am able to install Firefox on our Dell laptops at work that run XP, and use the Foxmarks extension there. I also discovered the upcoming Foxmarks for Safari beta and signed up. About four days ago I downloaded it and will never worry about syncing bookmarks again.

I have been using firefox add-on “SyncPlaces 3.x”
I can sincerely recommend this. The only downside is that you have to have access to a website (ftp/http with password) to sync. And it doesn’t support sync to other browsers.
The good side is that it also syncs your passwords and usernames and other preferences – if you choose to.
Works great!
