iPhone gold rush rages on
With 20,000 applications now available on the iTunes App Store, you might think it would be really, really hard to get enough visibility to actually make real sales. Fortunately for a fortunate few that isn’t the case.
Whether we’re talking about Trism (opens iTunes), which at one point was bringing in $250,000 a month, or the current head over heals hit, iShoot with its blistering $600,000 per month sell rate, it’s clear that the App Store is anything but a flash in the pan phenomenon for a growing list of developers that have struck rich on Apple’s newest frontier.
Not chump change
“I’m not going to be a millionaire in the next month, but I’d be shocked if it didn’t happen at the end of the year. If it weren’t for taxes I would be a millionaire right now,” saidiShoot developer Ethan Nicholas

And, what exactly is so great about iShoot that would make buyers plunk down $37,000 in a single day for a tank game? Look at that cheese ball logo!
Honestly, that’s a really tough question to answer as it’s essentially a clone of the venerable tank games that have been around for decades. I’m pretty sure I played a game almost exactly like iShoot on my Mac Color Classic way, way back in 1993.
Everything old is new again
So, what inspired Nicholas to recode a classic game from yesteryear, the one that allowed him to quit his day job? What is the well from which this treasure flows?
Well, of course, he was broke and the example of Trism got him motivated.
Thereupon, my advice for Nicholas is simple—save and invest as tomorrow’s probably going to be just another day.
My advice for anyone thinking about getting their share of the App Store millions? Hmm, let’s just say that before he tried, Nicholas didn’t know how to write software for the iPhone…
What’s your take?
