Chromium for OS X arrives (kind of)

February 14, 2009

Not quite as fast as a speeding bullet and a good deal less stable than Britney after a bottle of dilaudids (don’t you miss gratuitously ‘dissing her?), here’s a fresh, off label build of Chrome for Mac that’s more usable than the 9750 version fouling up the torrents.

From Chris Latko, the guy who brought us the Intel Optimized build of Shiretoko 3.1b3pre, comes Chromium (9780) for OS X, a slightly more complete and usable build of Google’s WebKit-based browser.

Although I couldn’t get this build to load a single page, Mssr Latko managed a good deal more than that and says with confidence that Chrome’s performance is very close to that of the nightly WebKit builds, the current and reigning champion.

Latko also adds the following:

  • There is an iPhone directory with resources and nib files
  • The version of WebKit being used is almost in sync with the WebKit trunk
  • There is some Mozilla code in here, but not as much as I would have thought
  • Google BuildBot waterfall page is amazing
  • OS X Chromium torrents popping up of build 9750 are causing people problems

With all of that said, the closest thing to actual working code that resembles Chrome is still Stainless from Mesa Dynamics.

Take Latko’s special build of Chrome for OS X for a spin—download (10.5MB)—and then pop off in the comments below…
