Apple handhelds hold U.S. WiFi lead

February 17, 2009

The newest Admob Mobile Metrics Report is out and it shows that Apple is continuing to build upon its already significant lead in handheld device WiFi requests in the United States.

The two Apple handhelds (iPhone and iPod Touch) accounted for 29.1 percent of United States Wi-Fi Internet access requests during January. Of these, the iPhone took a 16.8 percent share while the iPod totaled 12.3 percent, according to the AdMob report. That represents a treble increase over traffic in November 2008, when iPhone users accounted for only 8 percent of total U.S. requests on Wi-Fi networks. The figure is up more than nine-fold from the 3 percent scored by Apple in August of 2008.

The number of worldwide requests from these two Apple devices grew 28 percent in the month between December 2008 and January 2009, according to a report in TheRegister. The actual number of requests grew to 1.2 billion, with iPod growth significantly outperforming iPhone growth. According to the January figures, the iPod Touch now represents 40 percent of all Apple requests, double the percentage it represented in September of 2008.

Everyone else is far behind Apple’s WiFi request statistics in the United States. Motorola models came in second behind the Apple handhelds, accounting for a total of 19.3 percent. Samsung falls into third place with a total of 15 percent. Although RIM’s BlackBerry devices accounted for 6.3 percent of United States Wi-Fi requests, directly behind LG’s 6.4 percent, the BlackBerry 8300 and 8100 beat the Samung’s handset totals with 2.8 percent and 2.3 percent, respectively.

When taking the whole planet into consideration, the picture is a bit different. Worldwide, the lead belongs to Nokia with 43 percent of total requests, and Apple is in second place, well back at 32 percent. Percentages really fall off after the top two worldwide: RIM has 9 percent, HTC has five percent, while Palm has a 4 percent share.

These figures have to be good news for Apple. Not only are Apple devices a significant part of the marketplace in terms of overall numbers, but their owners regularly use the iPhone and iPod Touch devices to access the Internet. As sales of Apple handhelds continues to grow, we should see the Apple lead in the United States increase and also see Apple continue to catch up worldwide.
