It’s a familiar situation for the faithful—yet another legacy technology is facing oblivion at the hands of Apple. As with the forced migration from OS 9 to OS X, Apple Desktop Bus to USB, NuBus to PCI , SCSI to FireWire and just plain death for the floppy disc, Apple is said to be once again pushing the envelope by ending support for legacy wireless networking gear.

When it comes to “free as in beer” malware scanners, there aren’t a lot of choices. There are plenty of limited time trials available. Still, with only a couple of trojans and no self-replicating viruses or worms that target Mac OS X, how much choice do the rest of us really need?

We all know that Steve Jobs is on medical leave. But, does anyone know what he is doing whilst on leave? A new report can be viewed as either good news that Apple’s CEO is finally concentrating on his health or, disturbingly, that he has completely dropped off the radar for reasons most of us would rather not contemplate.

As the world’s national economies, large and small alike, swirl poetically down the toilet, like so many doomed synchronized swimmers, people are looking around and asking who if anyone can turn this mess around. Well, it is perhaps best to first ask who is still innovating, churning out products that solve problems that we know and especially the ones that weren’t apparent until the solution arrived.

The world is beautiful and there’s no better way to remind yourself of that than to put a little piece of it on your desktop. Moreover, being the utterly modern and advanced operating system that it is, OS X gives you plenty of ways to get images into and display them on your Macintosh.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has gained important allies in its dispute with Apple over whether jailbreaking the iPhone should be considered illegal or an allowable exemption under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, aka DMCA. Mozilla and its CEO, John Lily, have joined the fight to decriminalize iPhone jailbreaking and open the platform to third-party developers and applications.
