Rumors: Apple Snow Leopard and touchscreen netbook
It must be Monday: Apple rumors are flying. Today brings us projections that the new Apple operating system, Snow Leopard, will ship this June and that a touchscreen netbook will closely follow it.
The touchscreen netbook rumored to be in a late design phase is by far the most interesting of these two rumors. It is also the least likely to have any real credence. Depending on who you talk to, this new Mac netbook could take the form of a Macbook with a smaller form factor, an iPhone on steroids with a real keyboard and screen, or anything in between.
In support of the first possibility, Digitimes has written that Wintek, a manufacturer base in Taiwan “is currently working with Apple to develop some new products”, according to a Wired blog. The rumor has it that the new product is a touch-sensitive screen that will ship as a part of “Apple’s new netbook.” This particular rumor has it that the new netbook will ship during the third quarter of this year.
One would think that such a release, if it ever came, would add to the Apple line and not be a replacement for anything current in that line. For purely financial reasons, though, Apple actually could use a contender in the lower-priced netbook arena. There will not be a lot of money to spread around on new computer hardware until the economy improves significantly. It could not hurt Apple to have an entry with a lower price tag than the least expensive current MacBook.
The other big rumor of the day, if it can be considered such, is a possible shipping date for Snow Leopard. This one was developed by the Apple Expert at the Baltimore Sun, David Zeilor. He has taken Steve Jobs promise of a new OS in a year (about nine months ago), the fact that a number of Amazon books on Snow Leopard are due to ship in June, and the probable start date of the Apple WWDC, mixed them all together, shook it all well, and come up with a ship date of June 8, 2009. That date is probably as good as any other.

It was rumored that the new 13″ Metal Macbook would be cheaper than the current white one – how wrong they were. When the new Macbook shipped the old Macbook went up £19.00 & new one was a whacking £280 more than the old one – Steve Jobs HELLO RECESSION.
I work as an IT Manager and normal 15″ touch screens cost £390.00 so a screen inside a supposedly Macbook Mini would cost a SMALL FORTUNE. Steve Jobs own WORDS – We don’t know how to make a computer for less than $500 & fitting 3g inside a PC ideally a laptop is very hard to do. Steve Jobs err Netbooks by Sony, Advent, Dell & a few others all have inbuilt 3g so your not making any sense. BOTTOM LINE IT WILL BE A FORTUNE IF AND I MEAN IF IT HAPPENS.
