iPhone 3.0: What’s it got, what it’s not
Phil Schiller, Greg Joswiak, Scott Forstall et al have delivered the news of what we can expect for Apple’s handhelds in the weeks and months ahead. Is there something inside for you? We’ve got the juice here…
Some iPhone flavored statistics offered up by various presenters during today’s iPhone 3.0 presentations just to get your handheld juices flowing:
• iPhone SDK has been downloaded more than 800,000 times
— 50,000 individuals, companies have joined the paid iPhone developer program
— 60 percent of paid program members are new to Apple development
— 96% of submitted apps are approved
— 98% of approvals happen in 7 days or less
— More than 25,000 apps available on the App Store
— App Store available in 77 countries
• More than 17 million iPhones sold through Dec. 2008
— iPhone + iPod touch sales to date exceed 30 million units
— Now in 80 countries around the world
— Via 25 carriers
Of course, Apple has issued a press release—Apple Previews Developer Beta of iPhone OS 3.0—with the lead quote being:
“The new iPhone OS 3.0 is a major software release packed with incredible new features and innovations for iPhone customers and developers alike. It will keep us years ahead of the competition,” said Philip Schiller, senior vice president, Worldwide Product Marketing.
A huge volume of additional information and details pertaining to features, etc covered live are available on Apple’s developer website.
Steve Jobs did not make an appearance of any kind.
iPhone 3.0 in the spotlight (compiled live)
iPhone 3.0 adds over 1,000 new APIs
— In game voice chat
— iPhone software control of attached peripherals
— in-app e-mail, proximity sensor is available, streaming audio and video, etc
— Copy and paste (it’s in there), including between applications, web content
• • Shake your iPhone, touch to undo paste
— Can now send more than one photo at a time
— Landscape text input mode (yeah!)
— MMS has arrived
— Voice Memos, share via email or MMS
— Spotlight: Device wide, server search, including Mail, Calendar, etc
J.D. Power & Associates ranks the iPhone No. 1 in customer satisfaction among business smartphone users.
True turn by turn GPS, extended GPS API available to all apps.
Push notifications (finally) good to go
— An IM app running in the background reduces battery performance 80 percent
— Using push notification, battery only hit 23%
— Scalable and ready to go
— Push was delayed because it had to be rewritten to support the huge number of apps
Tethering support is built into iPhone 3.0, but Apple isn’t ready to announce as apparently some network partners (AT&T?) are dragging their feet.
MMS and stereo Bluetooth won’t available to original iPhone owners and, one assumes, the first generation iPod touch either.
Will be rolled out first as a developer beta from today. Will be free update for iPhone owners and a $9.95 paid update for iPod touch users.
Compiled from Apple sources and the excellent live coverage provided by Macworld, Gizmodo, Engadget and Ars.
