User enables tethering under iPhone 3.0

March 19, 2009

It has been nearly a year since Apple said it was working with AT&T to provide iPhone tethering (ie a way to use a mobile handset as a modem). Moreover, the mothership said on Tuesday that tethering functionality is built into iPhone 3.0 and the feature hadn’t been enabled because the company’s wireless carrier partners still aren’t ready to roll. At least one clever iPhone owner has taken matters into his own hands and doesn’t need to wait any longer.

Twitter user stroughtonsmith (via Slashdot) posted a tweet yesterday, about 24 hours Apple release iPhone OS 3.0 as a beta to developers, that reads simply “Tethering over USB right now (iPhone 3.0).” Further, he included a pair of tinyurl links to iPhone screencaps that confirm his claim, an edited version of one is included here.

Given that stroughtonsmith’s wireless carrier appears to be O2 (and his twitter handle kind of says it, too), it would seem a safe bet that this hacker enabler—our hero—is in the UK.

Also of note is the fact that iPhone OS 3.0 has not been jailbroken yet, which means that iPhone tethering has been enabled without resorting to PwnageTool or any such voodoo.

I’m pretty anxious to see how this has been accomplished…
