iTunes movies now available for purchase in HD format

March 20, 2009

With the permission of the movie studios, our favorite fruit company expanded its iTunes Store movie offerings on Thursday, though fans will definitely be paying a bit extra for the convenience of not leaving the comfort of their couch.

Apple has announced that the iTunes Store, in addition to the already extensive high definition (HD) rental catalog of titles ($5), will now also offer movies in the superior format for purchase ($20), as well, using their Mac, PC or Apple TV. Previously, HD rentals were only available via Apple TV.

“Movie fans are going to love being able to buy and rent films including Quantum of Solace and Twilight in stunning HD from the iTunes Store,” said Eddy Cue, vice president, internet services. “Customers have made HD content on iTunes a hit, with over 50 percent of TV programming being purchased in HD when available.”

What’s new in iTunes 8.1: Crowd sourcing the mix at your party

[A]nyone with an iPhone or iPod touch can now request (and even play on demand) any song in your library using Apple’s updated iPhone Remote app. This sounds both like a recipe both for disaster and perhaps a lot of fun—crowd sourcing the mix at your next party or even messing with you when you’re listening to music at a public Wi-Fi hotspot.

The iTunes Store catalogs over 10 million songs, more than 40,000 TV episodes, and in excess of 5,000 movies, including over 1,200 in stunning high definition video for rent.

Purchasing movies in HD format from the iTunes Store requires iTunes 8.1.
