Why does Steve Balmer say such patently absurd things? Well, probably for the same reason that John C. Dvorak or Paul Thurrott used to trash talk the Macintosh and its easily antagonized fans—it generates all kinds of page views and media buzz with almost no effort required (ie there’s no such thing as bad publicity).

It may be that we are just hearing more about it because of publicity, or it may be that Apple’s increased popularity is to blame, but Mac hacking seems to be becoming a more popular sport.

With the permission of the movie studios, our favorite fruit company expanded its iTunes Store movie offerings on Thursday, though fans will definitely be paying a bit extra for the convenience of not leaving the comfort of their couch.

It has been nearly a year since Apple said it was working with AT&T to provide iPhone tethering (ie a way to use a mobile handset as a modem). Moreover, the mothership said on Tuesday that tethering functionality is built into iPhone 3.0 and the feature hadn’t been enabled because the company’s wireless carrier partners still aren’t ready to roll. At least one clever iPhone owner has taken matters into his own hands and doesn’t need to wait any longer.

In addition to fan noise, Miami, Florida based assembler has not lacked for chutzpah, seemingly never missing an opportunity to cock a snoot at Apple and its more defensive, easily provoked fans. Thereupon, the passage of time has not imbued the clone maker with better manners—is this necessarily a bad thing™?
