iStat displays your Intel Mac’s vital signs

April 6, 2009

For lots of people, the vast majority of folks in fact, if it’s working, there’s really no need for additional information. There is a certain pointlessness to understanding things that aren’t broken. If you’re one of those people, then iStat for the Mac, iPod and iPod touch probably isn’t your cup of tea.

Bjango has created and released iStat for Mac, which can be configured to display all sorts of interesting information about your Intel Mac in the menu bar. When installing, you really only have one option and that’s whether or not you want to allow iStat to additionally download and install the Intel Sensors Module, which extends and enhance the parameters you can keep track of.

And, all of this is very, very cool. Further, by clicking on “TMP,” you can view and monitor the temperature of all sorts of things, not just the CPU, including your Airport Card, the northbridge, various heatsinks, etc.

Importantly, installing and running iStat on your Mac does not require a restart, which means that whatever it’s doing doesn’t require administrator or root access to your system—increasingly a concern in this increasingly security compromised world.

Still, there’s a lot more than iStat can do and that has to do with your iPod touch or iPhone. That is all of the above can be monitored remotely using your Apple handheld, which is a good thing™ if you run servers. Shweets!

And, the review of iStat Server + iStat for iPhone ($1.99) is coming tomorrow and will be published on iPhone.Blorge.com, so stay tuned boys n’ girls…
