Over 80% of Mac related businesses optimistic

April 22, 2009

Why are we such an enthusiastic bunch? Whether it’s because the we’re clustered in professions sheltered from the downturn or that we’re simply irrepressible, it would seem that the grass is indeed a shade or two more greener on the fairer platform.

MacTech has announced the results of an economic outlook survey of the Apple ecosystem. The survey asked five questions about the experience companies are having in the Apple related markets and the answers “rest of us” gave can only be described as upbeat:

• 83 percent of respondents describe the firs quarter of 09 almost as good as or better than last year’s first quarter.
• 90 percent forecast their business in 2009 will be almost as good or better than 2008
• MacTech saw a 13 percent year over year increase in ad revenues in the first quarter of 2009.
• 62.8 percent feel good or great when asked about the Apple/Mac segment

“The MacTech team decided to survey those in the market after seeing two significant trends starkly contrasting the general U.S. economic news,” said Neil Ticktin, Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of MacTech Magazine. “[O]ur staff has heard from many MacTech advertisers how well they are doing despite the economy. It’s been easy to get wrapped up in the bad news of the U.S. economy, but the reality is that for the Mac and Apple markets, things are strong and expected to get stronger.”

Despite a generally gloomy or worse feeling towards the general U.S. economy, the Apple related markets are fairing well and many are actually forecasting growth.

  1. Akers:

Its quite a quickly expanding Mac market at the minute so the potential customers are coming along quickly. However, unless Apple get a lower priced laptop (ie netbook/tablet) and a ‘proper’ desktop, sales could slow for Apple and this would have a knock on effect for other companies.

I suppose, to be general here, a lot of people who use Macs will have a bit more money for extras. For the record, I have a Macbook but don’t have money for extras, I’m on OpenOffice as I can’t afford an office suite, so I’m not one of the ‘snobs’ before I get shot down for that remark. It’s a generally accepted principle, and it appears to be showing through here.

As for predicting increased profits… we’re in a recession so its largely guesswork :P
