Apple to buy Twitter? Someone please shoot the messenger…
Somebody has to buy Twitter. Honestly, how else are the founders going to cash out? Lord knows they don’t have a business plan and there’s perhaps little chance they’ll find one before their 15 minutes are up.
ValleyWag reports that, of all the suitors that purportedly want to buy zeitgeist defining social network Twitter—FaceBook, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc—Apple is perhaps closest to inking a deal, which is said to be worth $700 million. According to ValleyWag:
A source who’s plugged into the Valley’s deal scene and has been recruited by Apple for a senior position says Apple and Twitter are in serious negotiations, with the goal of unveiling a deal by June 8, when Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference launches in San Jose.
What was that sound, you might well have asked? Well, it was the sound of millions of dual status — Twitter plus Apple— fanboys (and girls) publicly embarrassing themselves.
Thankfully, more reasonable and level-headed sounds are issuing from AllThingsDigital’s Kara Swisher who says, “Oh, the very notion of Apple and Twitter is a Techmeme dream-ticket, sure to be chewed over for days on end,” and cynically continues, “I once considered doing a post that just said ‘AppleTwitterAppleTwitterAppleTwitter….’ for 1,000 words to see how much idiotic traffic I would get.”
Well said, Kara, who adds reasoned reasons why ain’t no such thing happening further down her write up of this hot button topic.
And, if you want to read the words Apple + Twitter + no negotiations together in context, with a healthy dollop cynicism, then head on over to the UK’s Guardian, which likewise takes a very, very dim view of this dimwitted rumor.
This is one of those rare instances where shooting the messenger—preferably multiple times with a large bore weapon that even Sarah Palin would be ashamed to own—is perhaps the only appropriate response…
What’s your take (please follow me)?
