Apple’s Mac breaks into UK computer Top 5

May 8, 2009

Our favorite fruit company is generally weathering the economic downturn better than most computer makers and is doing so without a high-volume, margin-killing netbook in its product mix. Still, although US sales figures grab the headlines, not every market reported soft Mac sales last quarter.

Market data firm Gartner (via Macworld UK) has reported its first quarter unit sales estimates for Europe and the constituent countries therein. The big news for fans of Apple and the fairer platform is that Mac sales in the UK rose 6.6 percent, which was enough for the company to claim the number five spot in the country.

Q1 shipments in Britain totaled 3 million units, a 5.1 percent decline y-o-y,
with enterprise volume leading the fall and taking Dell’s share down with it.

As has been the case in other markets, Acer saw shipments rise dramatically, by 40.6 percent, as the company drives home its advantage in netbooks, a segment the Taiwanese computer maker increasingly dominates.
