No Steve Jobs at WWDC?

No Steve Jobs at WWDC?Apple announced that the keynote address for the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) will be done by “a team of Apple executives.” Does that crush hopes that Steve Jobs will be there?

When the world’s Macintosh/iPhone developers and their IT professionals meet June 8-12 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, it had been hoped that perhaps Steve Jobs would put in an appearance. Jobs, of course, has been on a six-month medical leave from his position as CEO of Apple due to a hormone imbalance problem associated with pancreatic cancer, according to Mac World. That leave started in January, and June is almost six months from January, so…

The announcement by Apple that the keynote address at WWDC would be given by a team of Apple executives seemed to make an appearance by Jobs less likely. The part of the announcement that said the team would be led by Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, would seem like the final nail in the coffin. Yes, Jobs could be described as one of a team of Apple executives, but to not describe him as leader of such a team verges on the ludicrous and flies in the face of the Jobs ego.

So, what is the big draw for attendance at WWDC? Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering says, “At WWDC, we will be giving our developers a final Developer Preview release so they can see the incredible progress we’ve made on Snow Leopard and work with us as we move toward its final release.”

Serlett may have failed to mention that there is another event or two likely to happen at this year’s WWCC. One would be the introduction of the new operating system 3.0 for the iPhone. Since most of the Apple world development buzz lately is about the iPhone and not the Mac, that may well be the big event. The other would be the introduction of the new iPhone itself, an event that is said to be happening very soon.

Even if Jobs is not at WWDC, the release of two new operating systems, and the possible introduction of one or more new iPhone models, will keep Apple watchers glued to their seats in San Francisco. There may well be more interest in the new iPhone than there is in the old Steve Jobs.
