Adium 1.4 beta brings Twitter, IRC functionality
It’s a banner day for the Adium development team as they have not only released a maintenance update of their popular multiprotocol Internet messaging client, but also a public beta with Internet relay chat (IRC) and Twitter functionality baked right in.
Zac West, Evan Schoenberg and Eric Richie – the driving forces behind Adium, and friends – have announced the release of Adium 1.3.4 (change notes) and Adium 1.4 beta (release notes). Although previously available to Adium users in limited form via the MGTwitterEngine add-on, this public beta is the first with true Twitter integration, which finally puts the popular 140-character Web 2.0 messaging system wear it belongs—right next to all of the other IM channels. Zac West says:
I’m terribly eager to announce the first of our series of betas for Adium 1.4, which features two new protocols, IRC and Twitter, as well as a ridiculously long list of improvements, including the latest and greatest in the world of libpurple.

As noted, Adium 1.4 beta offers a wide range of other features and fixes, including support for contacts in multiple groups and all-new authorizations window (which pulls together all authorization requests into one window), for example.
