Apple hiring ‘work at home’ phone tech support
Company plans to add hundreds of people every month in key urban areas this Summer in an effort to hire only the creme de la creme of Macintosh support professionals.
Cult of Mac reports that the mothership is advertising for “Apple At Home Experts” on the company’s own website and at various online job sites, including Monster.com, Yahoo HotJobs and MySpace Jobs, with the goal of hiring 150 staffers each month, July through September.
“Tech support is particularly good for this application because it’s so hard to find an army of people with those kinds of skills all clustered in one community,” says Maggie Klenke, partner, The Call Center School in Lebanon, Tennessee, who adds that 10 to 15 percent of all helpdesks are now virtual. “You can get the cream of the crop instead of the average high school graduate and trying to train them. I see it as a real plus.”
Specifically, Apple is said to be hiring in the Orlando, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Orem, Utah. This strategy should allow Apple to hire only the most qualified, Mac loving support professionals in lower-wage metros while also eliminating the costs of maintaining large call centers.
It also obviates the need to train high numbers of largely unqualified people needed to fill seats in a large call center; individuals that likely don’t have religion.
The ultimate job for Mac slackers? I’m guessing Apple’s usual standards will apply, meaning the unshaven and unwashed need not apply…
What’s your take?

Are you hiring people in the international arena as well. I can work from home with a voip line out of the US. I would be more than happy to provide a resume but cannot travel to the US.

They will have no shortage of candidates. The words “Apple” and “work at home” does have a pretty enticing ring when joined.

In the war for talent…it’s all about attracting great talent to your brand. Not hiring candidates but hiring the right candidates…and that may mean the corporation has to give a little, like allowing workers to work from home.
Once again Apple is out in front and will eat its competition for lunch on this one. First, it got Gen Y to not be able to live without its products…not it’s enticing them to love to work for Apple…very smart!

PC tech support out of the house is hardly new.
Great Talent will be doing something else, just as they are with other category. I’m not understanding how this is new.
Yeah, Apple is out in front like they were with the Intel architecture. Those commercials say I have a real person, a Genius, to talk to.
Apple invented air! Apple invented food! Apple invented sex!
Don’t get me wrong, this can be a nice position for someone, this trend is good for employees and businesses in many ways.
They will probably have the calls VOIP and monitor them like everyone else does. After dealing with people too dull to figure out the “It just works! Unless it’s an OS update.” the shine will dull a bit.
