Psystar cuts bait, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

May 26, 2009

The real news here is that when the court hears the Miami, Florida-based Mac clone maker’s bankruptcy petition the world will finally learn the identity of the financiers, if any, behind the company. So, who do you think the mysterious gentleman or men behind the curtain are? Dell, perhaps?

News.com reports that PsyStar filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Florida federal court last Thursday. Thereupon, the maker of “Open Computer” Mac clones is said to be $250,000 in debt (i.e. chump change), owed primarily to shipping and credit card processing firms. Erica Ogg wrote in News.com:

A major question surrounding Psystar and its young CEO Rudy Pedraza has been its financing. Because of the bankruptcy, a hearing will take place next week which will name the company’s creditors. At that time the mysterious backers of the Mac clone maker will come to light.

Apple, PsyStar: Let’s rumble!

This is just the latest chapter in the ongoing tech soap opera that is PsyStar vs Apple, which has seen the soon to be erstwhile Mac cloner sued for copyright, DMCA and trademark violations.

In perhaps its most hopeful hour, the Miami, Florida-based company retained high-powered legal representation and unsuccessfully tried to counter sue Apple—claiming anti-trust considerations gave it legal cover to pirate and distribute Mac OS X Leopard—an effort quashed by an unsympathetic federal judge.

Well, at least we finally get to learn who’s behind the curtain financially. Who do you think it will be? Microsoft? SCO? Dell? Or, will Dick Cheney pop up to claim it was an Bin Laden funded Al Qaeda plot to undermine American technological prowess?!?

(Nah, nah, nah, hey, hey, hey, goodbye…)
