Apple WWDC rumor roundup

Apple WWDC rumor roundupWith the WWCD on the event horizon as the biggest venue for Apple hype this year, it has become the vehicle for all the rumors usually reserved for both the WWDC and the old Apple Expo. Here’s a roundup.

It is the World Wide Developers Conference, after all, so we can certainly expect to see a lot of development oriented activity. Since this seems to be an iPhone kind of year, we are all looking forward to the final release of iPhone OS 3.0, and the WWDC will see an announcement for that release, or the final release itself. It is likely that we will also see a number of beta apps that showcase the features of the new mobile operating system. Maybe a turn-by-turn navigation system or some apps featuring notification or something to to with better email and messaging.

We are very likely to see the new Mac Snow Leopard featured at the conference. Some observers think that Snow leopard will be released and others feel that there just be an announcement of a firm release date. Either way, we will get to see some of the new features and maybe a new interface look and feel. But, fittingly for this meeting, a lot of what’s new in the new Mac OS are features that will help developers write better applications, and we will surely hear a lot about those features and what they will mean to users, probably with some beta demos.

Some Silicon Valley wags are expecting much of the show to revolve around iPhone Apps and the App store. It is clear that iPhone apps is where its at for developers and iPhone and app news, plus some changes in the App Store itself, are likely to get a lot of attention at the show. A story on ZDNet.com shows pictures of banners going up for the WWDC, some of which feature hundreds of iPhone app icons.

For all of the software news, the WWDC is likely to be dominated by the release of the new iPhone. All of the hype that can be brought to bear will be squandered on the new Apple mobile platform. There are enough rumors surrounding the new iPhone to make a dozen columns on their own, but we have all read all of those. One of the rumors that will not come true is a high-level appearance by Steve Jobs, even if they are debuting a new iPhone. The King will give the WWDC a miss.

Nor will there be an announcement of a new tablet device, said to be an iPod Touch on steroids. There will probably be a lot of talk about such a device, but nothing physical will be shown. We’re going to have to wait another year for that one, until Apple gets their new custom chip up and running and finishes an OS that is about halfway between iPhone OS 3.0 and Snow Leopard. That one is big enough that Jobs will show up for it.

I found this website that i linked to my name above actually found them in facebook, just click on my name to go there, dont worry, you dont need to be a facebook member. They had me up and running in no time and i now have complete access to their Apple developers account with my own user ID and password. They have links to the newest beta firmware for pc’s and mac as well as iTunes 8.2 links. It was worth it, just my 2 cents for anyone who is in the same boat i was.
