PornTube: Pushing a ‘video update’ that’s really a trojan

June 12, 2009

Perhaps the old adage that, “There’s no such thing as a free puppy,” should be updated to read, “There’s no such thing as free porn.” Social engineering at work…

ParetoLogic (via ZDNet) brings news that there’s another porn Web site out there whose aim is to infect your computer, Mac or PC, with a trojan.

“Do you own a Mac and think you are safe? Think again,” says Pareto analyst Jerome Segura. “One of the latest scareware programs targets both the PC and the Mac.”

The above site will download QuickTime.dmg. Unless you mount and install the software, it can’t do anything to you. So, the apparent take away here is that you shouldn’t 1.) visit PornTube or any sleaze ball porn or warez site and 2.) if any site, sleazy or otherwise, that you can’t personally vouch for (i.e. trust) wants you install software, don’t.

What a guy!

So, do you own a Mac and think Jeremy’s just another security industry pimp selling condoms to the faithful in the Internet’s red light district? Think again! It seems that Pareto only sells to Windows users, which makes one wonder why Jeremy bothered to write at all as he doesn’t bother to tell us what trojan is being used or how to protect oneself—thanks, Jer, you’re a bud.

Thereupon, eWeek reports that this attack installs a malicious shell script file called AdobeFlash in the ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder that’s configured to run periodically to download more malware from the attacker. As of today, it doesn’t download anything, but that could obviously change.

Sophos, which does sell Mac anti-virus software (30-day trial), has posted useful information on this trojan (OSX/Jahlav-C) and another (Tored, spreads via email), which are said to be making the rounds.

As always, stay away from shady Web sites, don’t download warez, be nice to people and you might want to consider using (free) antivirus software…

What’s your take

Look at the URL. It’s not PornTube, someone is spoofing PornTube’s appearance.

Thats wierd, i came across something very similar, but not on porntube. It asked me to download something saying i could have downloaded a virus/malicious software. I had to force quit safari because it would let me quit.
