Safari downloaded 11 million times in 3 daysEleven million people have downloaded Apple’s new and improved Safari browser in the three days since its release, including 6 million users of Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

Apple’s new Safari 4 browser is coming out of the starting gate extremely quickly, based primarily on reports of its drastically increased speed. Five million Mac users downloaded the the new browser version since it was released three days ago, but over that same period Safari 4 was downloaded 6 million times by Windows users, who often stay with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

Safari 4, according to tests run by Apple, loads Web pages at least three times faster than either Internet Explorer or Mozilla’s Firefox browser. Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, said of the new browser product, “Safari 4 is an incredible success on Mac and Windows with more than 11 million downloads in the first three days. Safari users love the incredible speed and innovative features like Top Sites, Full History Search and Cover Flow.”

On top of it’s basic faster page load speeds, Apple says that their new browser has made significant advances in Java technology with its new Nitro JavaScript engine. Apple tests show that Safari 4 executes Java scripts 8 times faster than Internet Explorer and 3 times faster than Firefox, according to an Apple Insider story.

Apple’s new version of Safari includes HTML 5 support for offline usage and also features support for advanced CSS Effects, which will allow the construction of Web applications with extremely rich media content, graphics and fonts. The Apple browser is also the first browser to pass the Web Standards Project’s Acid3 test, which examines how well a browser adheres to CSS, JavaScript, XML and SVG standards, all of which are designed for rich dynamic Web applications.

Safari 4 represents a legitimate Apple entry in the browser wars. It sets a new standard for speed in several areas and offers a number of innovative features. Although Safari is unlikely to ever overtake Mozilla’s Firefox product, the new version is likely to enable Apple to claim a larger share of the bragging rights in the browser arena.
