Apple posts some Snow Leopard Up-to-Date info, offers teaser
A regular part of the marketing of any new version of the operating system isn’t complete until the mothership clearly states its upgrade policy for new Mac buyers. Oddly, Apple has posted only a few details along with a cryptic note to tune in tomorrow. What’s up with that?
When Phil Schiller announced that a single Snow Leopard License will sell for $29 when it ships in September, those watching his WWDC 2009 keynote address erupted in cheers. If the faithful were gathered in one place today, the announcement of Apple’s Mac OS X Snow Leopard Up-to-Date Program terms would likely elicit the same response. According to Apple:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard refines the elegant Mac OS X user experience with lots of little touches and performance improvements that will make using your Mac even more enjoyable. It also includes a few big foundation technologies designed to tap the power of today’s computer hardware and provide a strong base for innovation. If you purchased a qualifying system or Xserve on or after June 8, 2009 that does not include Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you can upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard for $9.95.
That’s pretty generous for our favorite fruit company, but that’s not the most interesting thing about today’s announcement. It’s the sentence that follows which is sure have the media and bloggers alike speculating for all we’re worth.

Please check back on June 16, 2009, for additional information.
What’s up with that? WWDC and a half-year’s worth of product announcements covering the iPhone and Mac were last week. What’s tomorrow? Steve Jobs to announce and demo the Mac touch (aka iPod touch on steroids) during a live webcast of him skydiving to earth?!?
Well probably nothing quite so dramatic, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Apple will use tomorrow’s event, whatever it may be, to announce an extension of the 2009 back to school promo. How about buy a Mac and get a “free” 8GB iPhone, hmm?
That would be an announcement sure to make the rest of us reach for our wallets…
What’s your take?
