Apple said to be readying iMac, MacBook refreshes

June 26, 2009

One of the big surprises at this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference was the remaking and repricing of the MacBook Pro line — a welcome set of changes aimed at bolstering sales of the company’s most popular products. With that out of the way, it makes sense that the company will turns its attention to rejiggering its consumer desktop and portable product lines, as well.

Without quoting or citing anyone, AppleInsider says that Apple is preparing to introduce more affordable versions of its MacBook and iMac product lines, moves that are in line with the company’s ongoing effort to reposition around new, lower price points.

In May, Apple brought out an $899 iMac for education, though it’s only available to bulk buyers and not individual students, teachers, administrators or their families. Thereupon, some months after Apple introduced the eMac (education Mac) back in April 2002, it became available to the general public—a popular move at the time and one that many hope will be repeated again in 2009.

Further, some pundits have speculated that Apple’s expansion of the MacBook Pro family to include all unibody portables, leaving just a single model carrying the MacBook “none” moniker, was in preparation for an expansion of the low-cost consumer notebook line. Indeed, this would fill a large perceived hole (i.e. think analysts) at the bottom of Apple’s portable offerings to compete with cheap Windows notebooks and even higher end netbooks.

All of this and Apple’s annual September, or thereabouts, iPod refresh are coming. It’s going to be an interesting Summer full of rumor, innuendo and speculation…
