It’s official—Steve Jobs is back at work

June 29, 2009

The Apple CEO’s six-month-and-change medical leave, which has been punctuated by rumors, sitings and speculation, is now over, although it’s extremely unlikely that this mere morsel of information will do much to quell our preoccupation with the man.

Quoting Apple spokesman Steve Dowling, The BBC reports that Steve Jobs now is officially back at work, splitting his time between office and home.

“Steve Jobs is back to work. He is at Apple a few days a week and working from home the other days,” said Dowling. “He’s currently at Apple a few days a week and working from home the remaining days,” adding that “We are very glad to have him back.”

In another write up, aptly titled The Steve Jobs Obsession, The BBC’s Maggie Shiels summarizes Jobs’ dual nature quite nicely in saying:

While Mr Jobs jealously guards his privacy and controls the flow of information regarding his own life, he is a star performer when he gets on stage at those Apple events touting the latest software upgrade or iPhone release. He does not come across as some tortured soul who prefers the company of bits and bytes. He seems really comfortable in his skin.

And, that’s a big part of what drives us all crazy about the man””he’s (rightly) content to let us suffer and apparently just as happy to see us come out for the events. Really, in the age of D-list reality TV and celebrity sex tapes, he could name his price for any portion of the story and he doesn’t.

It’s not that he’s wrong””quite the contrary. It is, however, quite amazing that the man is so disciplined…
