Apple’s Ive says he can’t draw, hates focus groups
I’ve always admired the guy, but this series of quips and quotes have only deepened my appreciation for his art. Also, chalk up another cultural milestone for Twitter as the design guru’s comments were broadcast live.
Macworld UK is reporting comments by Apple’s vice president of industrial design at a gala held by London’s Royal College of Art (RCA). Specifically, the design god credited with the iPod, iMac, G4, Titanium PowerBook and dozens of other icons of the late industrial age was interviewed live on stage by the outgoing rector, Professor Sir Christopher Frayling.
Here’re some of the tastier bits tweeted from the event:
—“I can’t imagine designing without making [physical products].
— “I love making prototypes. We go right from idea to prototypes. I just love making objects.
— “Prototypes create this dramatic shift in the conversation — suddenly it becomes tangible and the silence goes away.
— “When you do everything to make the very best product, it also means you’re very focused on just a few products.
— “And I’m a lousy presenter. So I focus on designing instead.
— “We don’t do focus groups. They just ensure that you don’t offend anyone, and produce bland inoffensive products.

For its part, the Royal College of Art, which hosted the interview, has graduated such famous names as David Adjaye, David Hockney, Travey Emin, James Dyson and Ridly Scott, the man behind Apple’s legendary 1984 (YouTube) Super Bowl ad spot that launched the Macintosh.
Jonathan Ive, who once designed toilets and has since gone on to win nearly every top design award, was born in Chingford, Essex, England, and is a personal friend of Apple CEO Steve Jobs, which makes a member of one of the world’s most elite clubs.
