Apple, nVidia fighting? No way, cuz they’re BFF

July 4, 2009

At least two generations of MacBook Pros have come to market with faulty nVidia chips that caused many to suffer a premature death. Further, the Mac maker and to a lesser extent chip giant have backstopped these losses with extended warranties, repairs and replacements. So, why would anyone think these two are anything but the bestest of buds?

Recent days have seen a rash of rumors regarding the friendship, or lack thereof, between Apple and nVidia. Some write ups have even gone so far as speculate that the relationship was coming to an acrimonious end.

Well, bugger that. Fudzilla, tip o’ the hat to my old friend Fudo, has spoken to “industry sources” close to chip maker and heard the word — “the nVidia-Apple relationship is doing just fine.”

Thereupon, Apple is still said to be buying nVidia notebook chips and chipsets at a prodigious rate.

A long kiss goodbye?

Regardless of the current, momentary state of the two companies’ relationship — good, bad or otherwise — it can’t just be shutdown at the drop of a hat. With every single factory-configured Mac shipping with nVidia graphics under the hood, not to mention their tight OS-level cooperation on OpenCL and H.264 acceleration — marquis features of Snow Leopard — it would take months if not years to unwind and wind down their dealings.

Then again, pairing nVidia CEO Jen-Hsun “can of whoop ass” Huang with Steve Jobs could lead to all sorts of unexpected outcomes…
