Mac games: 5 great backgammon games for your Mac

July 8, 2009

Whether you’re just wanting to while away the hours doing combat with a computer adversary or take part in international online tournament, the fairer platform has game with titles available for Classic Mac OS and PPC— come on inside and roll the bones!

Hoyle is an acknowledged authority in gaming with literally centuries of experience. Thereupon, when you buy Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2009 (30 minute demo, $20) you’re getting the gold standard and not just backgammon. This compilation includes Big Bang Board Games, checkers, chess, hangman, Mahjongg, anagrams, Sudoku and over 1200 different crossword puzzles.

Moreover, Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2009 is PC and Mac (PPC, Intel; OS X 10.4.x & up) compatible, and features a range of online add-ons and expansion capabilities.

Bgblitz Backgammon 2.6.2 (13.2MB) is advertised as “the Swiss army knife of Backgammon,” as it’s modular design delivers a range of playing experiences and features:

• Free Version includes all the features already in pre 1.0 versions, plus numerous improvements
• Player Version ($23) adds playing against BGBlitz, playing online, evaluation of positions and showing the best moves
• Professional Edition ($46) includes a rollout facility and a tutor giving comments on cube handling and game play

Bgblitz Backgammon is available for Mac (PPC, Intel; OS X, Classic), Linux and Windows.

The Byrum factor

The next three backgammon titles in our roundup, two of which are available for Classic, are all the work of David Byrum of Milwaukee, Oregon:

Absolute Backgammon (shareware, $25, 2.4MB, Intel only)
— Five skill levels for all levels of play and about any option/feature you might think of

David’s Backgammon (shareware, $20, 1.4MB)
— Solid, basic backgammon play with range of options

AceyDeucey Backgammon (shareware, $25, 1.8MB
— Six variations of backgammon: American Acey Deucey, International Backgammon, Dutch Backgammon, Nackgammon, Shesh Besh and European Acey Deucey

Of the titles listed above, my favorite is the free version of Bgblitz Backgammon as it’s attractive, easy to play and will scale (or not) to whatever level I choose to play.
