The end is nigh [Dvorak praises the Mac]
For years, there were three truisms you could count on, death, taxes and that PC Magazine columnist John C. Dvorak was good for at least one troll hole, link bait, piece o’ offal every month. Whether it was to boost his pageviews or just to enjoy watching the Mac fan boys squirm and squeal, he was so regular you could almost set your watch by him.
Well, hell as almost (not quite there just yet) frozen over.
It seems that his son purchased an Apple pro portable to specifically use DEVONthink, a Mac only application that “sucks up PDF files like crazy,” organizing and sorting them into manageable chunks in a database. Moreover, Dvorak says “it’s about as close to a killer Apple app as anything I’ve seen since VisiCalc in the late ’70s.”
I’m guessing he slept through the desktop publishing, audio and video revolutions, but that’s to be expected “” we’re used to him. Still, I could go on listing quote after quote of him praising the fairer platform.
But, for anyone who thought they knew this PC troll extraordinaire, whose very name was flame bait, Dvorak’s either turned over a new leaf or decided that Windows users are a more fertile constituency to slag and antagonize.
Will he seal the deal?
As I said, hell hasn’t quite frozen over for the simple reason that Dvorak hasn’t actually purchased a Mac and started using it as his full time machine. Thereupon, he says he just doesn’t need a new computer right now.
Does that wash? I’m so not going there.
Still, whatever the case and for whatever the reason, I really hope he does get a Mac, use it and write about it in the way that only a true convert can “” loud, proud and over top “” with that special toxic tartness of tongue that only Dvorak can dish.
Hey, maybe we’ll start seeing him at MUG meetings…
What’s your take?

Maybe he isn’t a PC shill as everyone says he his. Maybe he just has strong opinions that are difficult to change. If he says that his family members are changing from PCs to Macs he may start to see the reasons why and that can affect and start to change his opinions. He’s saying he could become a Mac switcher and if he does, good for him.
Chris Pirillo was the same way. Little by little he changed from PCs to Macs and now he’s in love with his iPhone. As long as most people are alive and are even slightly willing to try new things, their opinions can be changed.

So an old dog can learn new tricks?

He used to write for MacUser magazine. He’s used Macs for years.
Right now his main computer is not a Mac. I’m sure there is a Mac on his desk as well.

It’s the summer doldrums – you need to have a historical view and do the math: Dvorak has been known to alternately write flamebait and honey to Mac users to drive traffic, we’re in the silly-season of news, and finally, he likely needs money for boat repairs. My guess: it’s the honey – now that he has our attention, the flaming article will happen in a week or so…

I never thought of J.C.D. as a PC Shill even back when he would lay a good rant down on macintosh computers. I often agreed with his points of view and reasonings against macintosh, even though I have been a long time apple computer user since the 80′s.
J.C.D. handed out just as much criticism out to other vendors as he did to Apple. Techies always seem to take any criticism of the tech they use as a personal attack and turn around lambast critics, regardless of how right the critics may actually be!
