BlackBerry Desktop still not real
The promise has been long, the first preview was delivered at the end of 2008, and will (the usual caveats aside) be delivered. As Apple’s third generation handsets, not to mention the Palm Pre bite sales, this move seems a little too little and not a little too late.
Inside Blackberry, the official Blackberry blog, reports that Research In Motion has shipped BlackBerry Media Sync.
“We have all been hard at work here for a while now, and you may have noticed some Mac support with the preview version of BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac released back in December,” says RIM’s Andrey [no last name given].
Here are some key features the initial release will include:
• Sync your iTunes playlists, calendars, contacts, notes and tasks
• Add/Remove applications
• Update your device when new software becomes available
• Backup and restore your device data with such features like automatically scheduled backups and optional encryption (security is #1 as always…)
• Manage multiple devices
• Requires OS X 10.5.5 and up
In the mean time, RIM recommends you “can download and use PocketMac for BlackBerry,” which was last updated in August 2008 and, I’m partly guessing, a not paltry $100.
With the iPhone and Palm Pre said to be eating the Blackberry’s lunch, a blog post with a promise cashable weeks and weeks from now by a guy without a last name seems pretty wimpy…
What’s your take?

PocketMac for BlackBerry is being provided free of charge, presumably as a result of some sort of licensing deal between RIM and PocketMac and undoubtedly conceived as a stopgap measure so RIM can claim some sort of Mac solution.
Unfortunately PocketMac for BlackBerry is worth every single penny of the £0.00 or $0.00 it costs as a result of this deal.
It is without a doubt the worst software I have ever had the misfortune to use, and this software is a version 4.1.25 not a version 1.0. To show you how bad it is, I consider even Microsoft software to be orders of magnitude better.
I sincerely hope BlackBerry Desktop proves to be much better.
PS. BlackBerry Desktop requires a minimum of Mac OS X 10.5.5 and almost certainly (based on BlackBerry Media Sync) will also be Intel only.

I finally had to give up on BB.
Faithful User for 4-5 years, and not being able to do any updates using Mac pretty much forced me to go iPhone3Gs 2 wks ago.
The sync feature worked, but a little too late.
Even going to T-Mobile to try and get them to update the set when Apps failed was worthless attempt.
Always excuses @ T-Mobile store locations.
Oh Well.
