Apple ponders App Store redesign

Apple ponders App Store redesignApple, probably having learned some lessons from the first year of operations, is about to redesign the App Store, one of the most successful out-of-the-gate offerings in computing history.

You can bet, though, that they will not do anything to detract from the phenomenal success the app division of iTunes has enjoyed. A year in operation, a billion and a half apps downloaded, 65,000 titles in stock, a huge pool of developers; one would not want to do anything to slow down the mobile application behemoth that the App store has become.

Still, some important people think it must be time for a change for the better. Apple CEO Tim Cook believes it’s time to improve the App Store even further, according to an AppleInsider story. Cook has said, “As you know, today we do it by type of app and also show popular apps and top-selling apps, et cetera. We realize there’s opportunity there for further improvement and are working on that.”

It is true that there may have been a little too much success on the number-of-apps side of the register. With that many apps in one place, it can be a little difficult to make one’s way through the clutter and find that one application that you want. One out of 65,000 can, the way things are now arranged, be a very small needle in a very large haystack.

It is feared that a lot of the best applications are getting lost in the mix, especially those that may cost a little more. Because of the way apps are displayed, and the propensity of so many people for “free” or “cheap” rather than “excellent” those apps with higher prices plus outstanding functionality and usability never seem to get on the top-anything lists.

Especially considering the Apple philosophy on quality, the App Store seems to be built upside down, often looking more like a Wal-mart for iphone apps.
