Rumor: iTunes 9 screen caps show Last.fm, ‘social’ buttons

August 11, 2009

Thankfully, there’s no sign of “ooh, Blu-ray” in any of these images supposedly of Apple’s next generation media jukebox, management, storefront, device manager and Julienne potato slicer (why the hell not, everything else is in there). Then again, odd angle photos of a computer monitor must be one heckuva of lot easier to fake than actual screen captures.

In one of those bizarre “it’s a small world after all” moments, TobiasBischoff has posted iTunes 9 screen caps culled from a Chinese Web forum. The twist here is that Tobias, as you might have guessed from his name, himself is German and we learned about him through Boy Genius Report.

Thar’s grainy logos hidden in them cockeyed stills!

“Thereupon, rumors of imminent social networking integration with OS X and various Apple software titles have come to nought in the past, I can’t imagine why they’ll come true now if for no other reason than social networking is still a profitless black hole”—Blorge

And, this is where we come full circle (sort of) because it was Boy Genius Report who originally posted the notion that iTunes 9 will include social networking and Blu-ray support. Thankfully, there’s no hint of Blu-ray in these so-called screen caps and I for one hope rather loudly this rumor dies, dies, dies now.

Again, how is it that the less than skilled person who needed a still camera to capture these screen images managed to get them out to the world all cropped to different sizes? Call me extremely skeptical, but I’m guessing it’s a lot easier to fake a grainy picture of an image on a shimmering CRT display than it is to create a convincing original.

Another idea worthy of scrutiny is why a Chinese Web forum? Granted, we regularly see our friends in the Middle Kingdom getting early access to Apple prototypes or third-party add ons, but is there a reasonable scenario for them to have prerelease Apple software? I didn’t think so either…

What’s your take?
