Apple aims to green data centers with latest hire
There’s more to building a server farm than filling aircraft hanger sized buildings with racks and pushing out iTunes music, television and movie downloads by the billions. Further, if you’re looking for a manager with green back office voodoo, the short list is gonna be pretty short.
The Green Data Center Blog reports that Apple has hired Olivier Sanche, formerly eBay’s Senior Director of Data Center Services & Strategy, to run its data centers, including a newly selected site North Carolina.
Who is he? The kind of guy who takes the position that carbon reduction is a must and should not be compromised, which is a position I’m so ignorant of I couldn’t even mangle it.
“[W]e could count on Olivier to be ready with a passionate view on doing the right thing for the environment, adding issues about water consumption, eWaste, and other environmental concerns beyond simply the power consumed,” says The Green Data Center Blog
Sanche will be the company’s Director of Global Data Center Operations and, according the Green Data Center Blog, Greenpeace is targeting Apple’s data centers for scrutiny. So, actually building and running best of class server farms with a nominal environmental impact that deliver “it just works” reliability and a creamy smooth customer experience will probably be quite easy compared to dodging Greenpeace’s psychotic, scattershot approach to milking an issue (and Apple) for publicity.
Whatever the case, Sanche is and has been Mac user for years. Thereupon, knowing Apple and the people it hires, the data center’s going to be world class in ways people have never of thought of before…
What’s your take?
