Apple Event carded for Sept. 9, but no tablet expected
Cupertino’s annual iPod refresh dog n’ pony show has gotten a firm, though so far unconfirmed date. More importantly for a dwindling group of diehards it seems just as likely that the much wished for — ah, but if rumors could really ship — Mac touch, Mac tablet, iPod touch on steroids won’t see the light of day until 2010.
AllThingsD reports that an earlier rumor of an Apple Event scheduled for the week of Sept. 7 has been confirmed by “sources close to the company” and given a firm date, Wednesday, Sept. 9. It is believed that an as yet unidentified Apple executive — We want Steve! We want Steve! — will deliver the sermon from the mount a keynote address at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the venue for all September iPod reveals of the past.
The event … is expected to showcase upgrades to the iPod line and an update to iTunes that may involve some sort of social element. Our sources insist it will not involve any discussion whatsoever of the tablet Apple is reportedly developing.
Thereupon, Apple is expected to release revised iPod nano and iPod touch models that include cameras, adding still and perhaps more importantly video image capture to the industry-leading media player franchise, which has seen sales sag in recent quarts. The company revised the iPod shuffle in March of this year, so it’s unlikely any major changes will be made to this product.
It has also been rumored, though less convincingly, that Apple’s iTunes 9 will include for Blu-ray discs and Twitter/Facebook/Last.fm social networking.
What do you expect Apple will release at this year’s pre-holiday shopping season iPod refresh? Will there any surprises for the faithful?
