Apple ready to upgrade the basic MacBook
Apple is getting ready to upgrade the last remaining “old” member of the MacBook line, the basic MacBook, the last 13-inch model wearing the polycarbonate (plastic) shell.
The basic 13-inch MacBook, the last one now wearing that plastic shell, is overdue for a makeover and it is about to get one. It has been three years since Apple made any changes in that bottom-of-the-line MacBook, the one that has been the standard of college student returning to school in the Fall. Despite the lack of a significant upgrade, the little MacBook that could has had significant sales over that last three years, more than pulling its weight in a lineup steadily becoming glitzier.
All of the other MacBooks were upgraded and re-introduced at Apple’s t annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference in June. Apple introduced new versions of its 13- and 15-inch notebooks that use the same battery technology previously found only in the 17-inch models, according to a CNET story. When Apple upgraded the branding of the 13-inch unibody MacBook into the MacBook Pro line, the polycarbonate white plastic casing identified the base-level 13-inch model as the only true “MacBook.”
Despite a certain lack of glamor, the white polycarbonate Macbook has performed well in the marketplace. It has been pronounced dead a few times in the last six months because it was left out of the upgrade that was carried out on the rest of he Macbook lineup, all of which were wearing silver metal and designated as part of the no-longer-so-exclusive MacBook Pro series. However, that little plastic Macbook remained the second best selling Mac computer in the marketplace, with sales levels below in that of the basic iMac model. The base level MacBook is likely to lose the plastic shell in favor of a lighter, slimmer metallic body. There is also some chance that the MacBook could see other changed that would help keep the price down, allowing the MacBook to remain the top-sell at back-to-school time.
