Snow Leopard incompatible software list

August 28, 2009

When it comes to which applications — some new, some old — will run under Apple’s latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.6, there’s more than a little disagreement and, interestingly enough, some big name software made in Cupertino isn’t compatible. Wanna know more? Come on inside for a taste, the bitter and the sweet, of what works and doesn’t.

First off, Apple’s put together a list of some of the applications that Snow Leopard won’t run. This is only a partial listing and MacInTouch, among others is hosting “yes or no” listing of applications its readers have tested for Snow Leopard compatibility.

One troublesome item that seems to be on everyone’s list is Photoshop Elements 6. The reason PE 6 gets special mention is because it’s based on Photoshop CS3, which Adobe has said plays just fine with OS X 10.6.

Your mileage may vary

That said, after doing a clean install of Snow Leopard (Cult of Mac), Photoshop CS2 starts up and seems to run just fine with Apple’s Rosetta environment installed. For me at least, Photoshop CS2 ironically runs better than it did under OS X 10.5.x where it suffered regular crashes. Nevertheless, most sites report that CS2 applications are Snow Leopard incompatible.

Meanwhile, ComputerWorld, which has created its own listing of bad apps, reports that NeoOffice won’t launch, though Microsoft Office 2008 seems so far to be unaffected.

Last but far from least comes the http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ site, which is the largest and most comprehensive, though 100 percent unofficial, Snow Leopard software compatibility listing. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it’s so good and the group’s server so weak that the site is often unavailable (i.e. swamped).

(Don’t miss Apple’s compatible printer and scanner list.)
