How to: Open emailed links in the background

August 29, 2009

You’re reading mail and there’s a link you need to check out, but you’re not quite ready to start browsing. Whether you prefer the convenience of the keyboard or one-click simplicity, we have ways to make you more efficient.

If you’re anything like me, you get anywhere from a handful to several dozen Twitter notifications in your Mail inbox every day, plus all sorts of Facebook messages, news alerts and commercial come ons. That said, I like to handle all the email before I move on over to the browser, meaning there’s a way to open emailed links behind mail.

Actually, there are at least two ways.

Mousing around

Back in the day, no self-respecting Mac user would be caught dead with a two button mouse. Today, most of us right click as if we were born to it.

And this is the first method for opening emailed links in the background behind Mail. Right click ( Ctrl + click ) and then select “Open Link Behind Mail” (see image below).

If you’re a two fisted Mac user with one hand perpetually on the mouse and the other planted at the bottom right your keyboard, then this method’s for you. Put your thumb on the on the Command (⌘) key and then click the link.

Like Command clicking a link in Safari, this will open the emailed link in a new tab in your default browser without interrupting your work flow.

Both of these little tricks work equally as well in Leopard or Snow Leopard, which means you now speak fluent big cat in two distinct dialects — get your spots on!
