Apple confirms Sept. 9, but no word on Steve, tablet

August 31, 2009

The day after Apple’s buy a Mac and get a free iPod touch back to school promotion ends, the Cupertino, California-based Mac, iPod and iPhone maker will hold a media event. Many news outlets, including Mac Blorge, correctly predicted the date of Apple’s annual music and media player refresh, but how many of our hopes and dreams will the company fulfill?

Reuters reports that Apple has sent invitations to mainstream media outlets for its annual iPod and iTunes event for next Wednesday, September 9, a date that most of the known universe had penciled in two weeks ago. As per previous practice, the company will hold this media player and music dog n’ pony show at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater.

However, Apple’s invites give no indication as to what products or who will be introducing them, though it’s widely rumored that Steve Jobs will roll out new camera equipped iPod touches and nanos, as well as a Facebook enhanced version of iTunes.

A typically enigmatic image and slogan give nothing away.

Although some still hold out hope, the long rumored Mac touch, Mac tablet, iPod touch on steroids or whatever name it ultimately comes to market wearing is not expected to be announced or ship until early 2010. Recent rumors posit that Apple’s planning not only a 10 inch touch model but an entire family of devices with 13 and 15 inch devices spotted in China.

Further, some pundits (and the usual hopeful types) believe Apple will announce the addition of the Beatles catalog to the iTunes Store. Of all the unsubstantiated magic 09-09-09 (ie September 2009) rumors to date, this is perhaps the one with the greatest chance of coming true…

What’re you expecting/hoping Apple will announced and/or ship next Wednesday?
