Is a Jobs Apple event appearance necessary?

Is a Jobs Apple event appearance necessary? How much does it really matter whether or not Steve Jobs appears at the Apple music and iPod event scheduled for next week, given that there will probably be few surprises at the event itself?

The Apple rumor mill always runs overtime. That is certainly the case surrounding the event scheduled for next week, during which we are told that Apple will unveil a new music subscription service, and new music-oriented social networking application, and a brace of new iPods. Some observers also expect some version of the fabled Apple tablet computer will be introduced, though the reported specifics of that introduction vary widely and many say that it is simply not going to happen yet.

One important aspect of these rumors is the amount of ink being given to the likelihood that Steve Jobs will be personally introducing whatever new and improved products which may become the other stars of the show. Given that we all have a pretty good idea what the new hardware and software is, the Jobs aspect is perhaps the most interesting rumor of the lot. But is it more than a simple rumor-mill item, crossing somehow into the realm of real-world importance?

As it transpires, there is probably more actual importance attached to a Steve Jobs appearance than even a tablet appearance. According to a PCMag story, well-known Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is almost guaranteeing a major appearance by Jobs at next week’s event, and he is much more interested in Jobs that in any other part of the show. It seems that Munster feels that a Jobs appearance will have more effect on the Apple share price that any product announcement that they are likely to make, perhaps even including a tablet announcement.

Investors follow news of Jobs’ health and activity status very closely. Many of them are convinced, rightly or wrongly, that as goes Jobs, so goes Apple. Current and potential stockholders are aware that Jobs has been back at work, and said to be indulging in his up-close and personal management style. If he is feeling well, and back in control of Apple, it would be very odd indeed were he not to have a large hand in next weeks festivities. So, the smart word has it that Steve Jobs will be bolstering the Apple share price with a major appearance next week.
