How to: Control your Mac with Jedi mind tricks Twitter

September 16, 2009

First things first. We need to be clear that these aren’t the droids you’re looking for and that you don’t want to sell me any death sticks. Now, before you go home to reconsider your life, let me show you a neat little piece of software you can use to remotely control your Mac and do it very fashionably at that.

TweetMyMac is a nifty app that’s free and easy to use. In addition to the software, you need a new Twitter account.

To get set up, just follow these easy steps:

1. Sign up for a new Twitter account just for your Mac – feel free to protect the updates if you like.
— IMPORTANT: You MUST sign up for a new account, not just use your normal Twitter account or everyone you follow will be able to control your Mac
2. Set the new account to follow your main twitter account.
3. Download and run TweetMyMac.
4. Enter the account details for the new account you signed up for (your new, Mac-specific Twitter account)
5. Control your Mac by sending a direct message with a command (either using the direct message option on twitter or by writing a tweet of the form “d MacAccountName command”)
6. Your Mac will reply to some commands (like retrieving IP address or screenshots) using it’s account so you will probably want to set your main twitter account to follow your Mac.

That done you can now tell your Mac to shutdown, restart, logout, sleep, tell you its external IP address, snap a photo with the iSight camera, take a screen grab, download a torrent, un-mute audio, open an app or file, and a half dozen other commands.

Get your copy of TweetMyMac by clicking here (909K).

What’s that sign post up ahead?

Of course, if you’re anything like me, one of the first ideas that popped into your head was the potential inherent in TweetMyMac for practical jokes and otherwise tormenting family and friends. The ability to mute and un-mute audio remotely puts a devilish grin on my face.

Or, perhaps remotely opening say a video file that the unsuspecting viewer might find “entertaining” comes to mind, as well…

What’s your take?
