Mac games: Doom, Glider, Marathon, etc available as freeware

September 20, 2009

Do you have an older, maybe really old PowerPC Mac gathering dust under a desk or in a closet? Then you really owe it to yourself to fire that Mac OS Classic puppy up and check out a Web site dedicated to keeping classic games alive.

Remain in Play, which bills itself as the site “where games live forever,” is home to scores of commercial titles that once fetched or more, such as Quake III Arena (See also: Mac games: Getting hot n’ sticky with QuakeLive). All of the games in the Mac section run only on Classic versions of the Mac OS (ie 7.x.x through 9.x.x).

The vicious monsters and nastier weapons of Marathon Infinity.

In addition to Quake III Arena, other notable titles include: Glider Pro, Heretic, Marathon 2, Marathon Infinity (wasted months of my life playing this one), Doom and Galactic Patrol with 25 games available in all.

Again, you will need an older Mac running Classic Mac OS or a bit of luck using SheepShaver.
