New iMacs: You can never be too thin or endowed… [u]

September 24, 2009

Will Apple finally push out Blu-ray equipped computers? With the Mac, iPod and iPhone maker’s prosumer all-in-one ready for a makeover, that’s just one of the rumored “new” features built into the newly curvaceous desktop product line.

Generally speaking, every year sometime after their Fall iPod refresh, the mothership will roll updated Macs in time for the holiday shopping season. Thereupon, AppleInsider brings us the news that newly redesigned iMacs, sporting thinner n’ curvier enclosures, and under-the-hood improvements could be arriving at an Apple Store near you this month.

Of course, this latest report expands on information Mac Blorge provided a week ago today about the upcoming redesign.

If past practice holds, Hon Hai (a.k.a. Foxconn) is the OEM producing the mothership’s latest prosumer desktops.

The new iMac’s appearance is expected to be based on Apple’s current Cinema Display line, which means they’ll also be a bit thinner — one of Cupertino’s enduring obsessions.

A bag o’ hurt on every desk?

On the inside, in addition to the usual processor, hard disc and graphics updates, it’s believed that Blu-ray burner/readers — Steve Jobs’ fabled bag of hurt — might find their way into high-end models and that enhanced audio functionality is on tap, as well.

[u] French website Mac 4 Ever (translation claims that the new iMacs will arrive with an integrated SD card reader and miniDisplayPort, as well as a four-core Xeon processor in their high end model. They also claim the mothership’s ready to release a multi-touch successor to the Mighty Mouse, which was introduced in August 2005. [u]

Lastly, Apple is expected to cut iMac pricing (see also: Rumored $899 educational iMac arrives) with the company offering volume and educational buyers $100 and $200 instant rebates on the company’s current models in order to smooth the way for the newer, less expensive iMacs.

Nevertheless, this fan boy is hoping the mothership will offer an iMac at the $799 price point, driving Mac mini pricing down to $499 and $649 in the process…
