Chrome by Christmas or Stainless now? Hmm…

October 12, 2009

About a year ago, Google’s Sergey Brin was embarrassed to admit that it might be “months” before Chrome would arrive on the Mac. Now, the search giant’s CEO managed to deliver some smarmy praise for Mac users, but not the actual product, which is already at version 3.0 on Windows.

Quoting Eric “I was a board level corporate mole” Schmidt, Macworld UK Google is now promising Chrome for the Mac by Christmas, which is a least a year longer than the company initially promised the rest of us.

“I see a lot of Macs in this room, and a lot of very sophisticated people are using Macs now and we need to get a version of Chrome out for that, which we’ll have in a couple of months,” said the search giant’s CEO. “The key to browser strength is speed.”

Why, yes, Eric, we are sophisticated — not to mention more educated, richer, greener, younger and perhaps a little queerer than most folk — enough to know when we’re being pandered to (thanks).

Get the better metal…

This latest promise comes 13 months after Google co-founder Sergey Brin said that the lack of Chrome for Mac was embarrassing and that product would be arriving in months (not years).

Skip ahead to 4 minutes, 25 seconds.

But rather than whine about Google’s inability to commit and deliver real product, why not download and use a WebKit-based browser that’s wicked fast, sandboxes tabs and processes, and offers some really slick features not available anywhere else?

Seriously, you’ve gotta put Stainless on your list
