How to: Save ink, money when printing from your Mac or PC
When it comes to legal yet blatant ripoffs, the people selling razor blades and computer printer ink have really got it down pat. In fact, printer ink can cost up to $8,000 per gallon**, and that’s a rather powerful incentive to conserve as much of the stuff as possible.
Thereupon, you will want to download and install Ecofont (53.6K), which its creator claim can helf inkjet printers reduce ink usage by up to 20 percent, reducing the cost per gallon by $1,600 and that’s not exactly chump change.
After extensive testing with all kinds of shapes, the best results were achieved using small circles. After lots of late hours (and coffee) this resulted in a font that uses up to 20% less ink” — Ecofont marketing spin.
More ink (and money) saving tips:
— Use draft mode, which reduces ink use
— Print colors as grayscale when drafting and proofing documents
— Check out Kodak and its high-efficiency, low-cost printing solutions
— Refill ink cartridges when you can instead of buying new
— Purchase off-brand ink cartridges
Based on Verdana, this sans serif font face is just the stuff for home and small business printing. Further, if you’re trying to cut costs and green planet in an enterprise environment, there’s Ecofont Professional, which is billed as clever software for the office environment which transmogrifies your corporate typeface into an ink/toner saving version, as well — simply brilliant.
As you might expect, Ecofont is available for Mac, Linux and that other lessor operating system.

The best solution in lowering the cost of ink jet ink is to get the hell out of ink jets! When you tell someone that a gallon of ink jet ink costs $8000 – 10,000 their eyes gloss over. But if, on the other hand, you say that a page printed in color on an ink jet costs 75 cents/page and a page of black and white costs 22 cents/page and that same page using a color laser costs 9.6 cents/page and black and white costs 1.4 cents/page, THAT they understand. The upfront cost on a color laser (like my Xerox 8560) is higher than an inkjet, but the ongoing cost of the consumables is significantly lower.

By the way in case you’re wondering how we got to $8000 – $10,000 for a gallon of ink jet ink, here’s how –
Let’s say you pay $12 for a 4.5 milliliter cartridge. There are 3785 milliliters in a gallon. Divide 3785 by 4.5 to give you how many cartridges in a gallon (841.11). Multiply 841.11 by $12 (the cost per cartridge) and you get, drum roll please, $10,093.33 – the cost of the ink per gallon.

Don’t forget, as well, that 3rd party and remanufactured cartridges are available, as well. When purchased from a trusted supplier, this can be a great way to cut printing costs, as the price of the cartridge “core” is essentially eliminated from the price.
Many printers by Lexmark and Xerox also come with electronic document management software, which can help reduce the need to print certain pages at all.
