The New iMac: It’s tomorrow then? [u]

October 20, 2009

The world beyond the 1 Infinite Loop woke this morning with visions of ultra-thin iMacs dancing in their heads, but Apple has left us guessing once again. Thereupon, with Microsoft to set begin its Vista SP4 Windows 7 assault, Steve Jobs and his merry band of deviants have already disrupted Redmond’s best laid plans by doing nothing.

[u] Hours later than usual, the Apple Store is down.

Following yesterday’s stunning quarterly results from Apple, which saw the company report best ever profits on best ever Mac sales, the obvious next move for the was obviously going to be the release of new and more affordable iMacs, MacBooks and Mac minis today. It is after all Tuesday.

Nevertheless whatever Apple’s up to and whenever they choose to execute, that collective pause — a momentary cessation of breathing — just heard around the world came out of Redmond. Windows 7 will not arrive unmolested.

It’s called execution

Moreover, Steve Balmer’s multibillion dollar bet is going to be derailed by a simply styled piece of Aluminum caressed and blessed by Saint Jonathan Ive and his cloister of design priests. Redmond’s symphony of borrowed design metaphors and tangled registry files will be tastefully drowned out by a single masterfully played note — that’s gonna be galling.

Thereupon, Cupertino is riding a wave of momentum that’s been building since Steve Jobs’ return to the company late in the last century. It doesn’t particularly matter that Apple has less than 10 percent of the US and not even 5 percent of world computer markets, the company owns the idea of what a computer is — everything else isn’t a Mac.

So tomorrow people around the world will gather for their Windows 7 launch parties and talk about Apple’s newly redesigned iMac instead. It couldn’t get any better if I was just making this stuff up…

It’s perfect marketing by Apple to steal Windows 7’s thunder. We will see when the Apple store goes back online today.
